Kay Walsh

Professional Summary Kay Walsh is the managing director and founder of Nova Economics, a specialist economic and strategy consultancy. Before founding Nova, she led the economics advisory team within the strategy practice at Deloitte Consulting South Africa. Kay has over fifteen years of experience advising private and public sector organisations on energy policy, economics, economic regulation and tariff design. She recently advised the national energy crisis committee in the Office of the Presidency on the design of a proposed load-shedding reduction programme. She also led a pre-feasibility study for Eskom Distribution to assess what role they could play in facilitating and accelerating the uptake of Rooftop PV and storage and EV charging infrastructure. Kay has advised Eskom on economic and regulatory issues since 2009 and has provided written expert testimony in key legal disputes between Eskom and the National Energy Regulator, NERSA. She has authored several consulting reports on the structure of the electricity market in South Africa, the impact of electricity tariff increases, approaches to regulation and the economic costs of load shedding. She has consulted with a range of clients on energy and climate-related issues including EIUG, Exxaro, Vtti B.V, Transnet, TNB Malaysia, UNDP, UNDCF, and GreenCape. Her more general expertise includes analysis of policy and regulation issues, corporate strategy development, cost-benefit analysis, and statistical and econometric modelling.
