Kay Walsh is the managing director of Nova Economics, a niche economic and strategy consulting firm based in Stellenbosch. She also serves on the council of the South African Association of Energy Economics. Before founding Nova, she led the economics advisory team at Deloitte Consulting in Johannesburg. Kay has over 15 years of experience advising a range of public and private sector clients on a range of matters related to economic regulation and policy, energy economics, and business and social investment strategies.
She has particularly strong experience in the energy sector having advised Eskom on economic regulation and a range of energy and climate policy issues since 2009. She has authored several publications on the structure of the electricity market in South Africa, the impact of electricity tariff increases, approaches to regulation and the economic costs of load shedding. She has also provided the high court with written expert testimony in key legal disputes between Eskom and NERSA.
