Ashlin completed his BSc(Hons) Environmental Science degree in 2018 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His thesis investigated the socio-economic impacts of solar water heaters in low-income households in Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal, which was published in the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews Journal. Ashlin’s continued focus in the field of energy provided him an opportunity, in 2018, to attend a Renewable Energy Conference, hosted by São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Renewable Energies, held at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, fully sponsored by FAPESP.
In 2019, Ashlin accepted an internship with the German Development Agency where he was required to research the socio-economic development and enterprise development impacts of the Independent Power Producers (Wind farms) in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa. Demystifying the social benefits of these IPPs under the REIPPP Programme is a vital part of South Africa’s Just Transition.
Ashlin currently works for the City of Cape Town Municipality, Energy Directorate. The core function of this position is to lead on renewable energy and carbon data this includes liquid fuels, greenhouse gas inventory, electricity databases, waste and waste water and energy and carbon modeling. Additionally, he has completed his Master’s in mechanical and mechatronic engineering (renewable energy) at Stellenbiosch University which focussed on Modelling a Hybrid Wind and Solar Power Plant

Ashlin has gained considerable experience in a career spanning only a few years. The field of renewable energy is an inherent passion for him, as can be seen below in his work for the City but also by his voluntary commitments, on a local and global scale, in the youth climate change and energy sphere.
