The global electric vehicles (EV) market’s growth has increased demand for African minerals like cobalt, necessitating supply chain transparency and security. Glencore supplies battery minerals to major car manufacturers to support their EV goals.
Marie-Chantal Kaninda, President of Glencore in the DRC, participated in a forum at this year’s Mining Indaba, discussing the successful business relationship between car manufacturers and mining companies.
In the DRC, Glencore produces copper and cobalt, two resources crucial for energy transition, through Kamoto Copper Company and Mutanda Mining. Cobalt is used in battery technologies, including EVs, making the car industry a major consumer. In 2022, the DRC produced 73% of the world’s mined cobalt, according to the Cobalt Institute.
