The mobility sector is undergoing a significant transformation with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). Companies are increasingly looking to transition their fleets to EVs to benefit from cost savings, reduced emissions, and a competitive edge. However, this transition requires careful planning and skilled personnel to manage and optimize electric fleets.
In this interview, we speak with Alex Munene, Founder & Fleet Mobility Expert at Advanced Mobility Centre, a leading organization in Africa providing expertise in electric mobility capacity building, fleet management consulting, and advanced driver training.

1. What is your primary role at Advanced Mobility Centre? | My main task is to build the team & partnerships that will drive skills development for the mobility sector in Africa. I ensure that our clients gain high skill levels in electric mobility, fleet management & advanced driving. We are like a tour operator who goes with you on the journey, not a travel agent that organizes for a trip they are not taking. |
2. When did you develop an interest in electric fleet management, and what sparked it? | I have strong background in ICE vehicle fleet management. The challenge to attain ever lower costs per kilometre pushed me to start exploring electric vehicles about five years ago during covid shutdown. The more I researched about electric mobility, the more I sensed that something big was beginning to take shape. That is when Advanced Mobility was born. |
3. Why is it crucial for companies to grasp technical skills when managing and transitioning to electric vehicles? | EV technology is evolving rapidly, and skilled personnel gain a strong competitive advantage in fleet operations, leading to profitability. |
4. What advice would you give to organizations considering transitioning to electric fleets? | Just start. The operational savings are over 75%, which changes everything about the business when done properly. |
5. How does your training equip participants to optimize their fleet’s performance? | Participants teardown and reassemble an electric vehicle, visit e-mobility firms, and learn to manage vehicle selection and reduce costs. |
6. If people want a personalized consultation with you, how can they arrange it, and what value will they gain? | We offer a free 45-minute consultation to assess fleet performance. Organizations gain insights on cost reduction and safety improvements. Register here. |
7. How do you envision the future of e-mobility adoption in Africa? | Africa’s EV adoption will largely depend on global markets but presents opportunities for energy independence and establishing EV industries. |
8. Where does the charging infrastructure fit into the challenges that fleet managers may face? And do you cover this in your training? | Considering that over 90% of EV charging happens at home or work, a key task when a fleet manager is acquiring electric vehicles is setting up charging points. An own charging point reduces the operational cost of commercial chargers but increases the fleet acquisition costs significantly. The technical & business aspects of EV charging are covered in our training programs. |
