Minister Creecy Highlights Integrated Transport Solutions for Rugby Fans Attending Springboks vs. All Blacks Match
Johannesburg, South Africa – Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, Sunday led a media tour to showcase the seamless integration between the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and the Gautrain Management Agency, ahead of next Saturday’s highly anticipated rugby test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks.
The collaboration between PRASA and Gautrain is set to provide rugby fans with a convenient and efficient transport solution, illustrating a model of integrated urban transport in Gauteng. The match will take place on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Emirates Airline Park Stadium in Johannesburg.
“In preparation for the Springboks’ test match, we are demonstrating the integration between the Gautrain Management Agency, PRASA rail systems, and other modes of transport to benefit commuters—particularly the rugby fans heading to Emirates Airline Park Stadium,” said Minister Creecy.
Rugby enthusiasts can look forward to a streamlined journey that highlights the effectiveness of Gauteng’s public transport network. Fans can board the Gautrain at any of the seven stations between Hatfield and Park Station (including Pretoria, Centurion, and Sandton) or any of the five stations between OR Tambo International Airport and Park Station, with a transfer at Sandton Station. From Park Station, fans can transfer to a PRASA train for the short three-minute trip to Ellis Park Station, conveniently located near the stadium.
To further enhance the experience, PRASA will operate special trains at 15-minute intervals from Park Station to Ellis Park Station between 10:30 AM and 9:30 PM. The journey will be complimentary for match ticketholders, with each train accommodating up to 2,440 passengers per trip.
The Gautrain service will also extend its operating hours, running from 5:30 AM until 10:40 PM on match day. The last Gautrain will depart from Park Station at 10:00 PM, with standard fares applying.
“Our government, across national, provincial, and local levels, is committed to designing and building sustainable cities with integrated transport systems that support economic growth and benefit our citizens. The proposed expansion of the Gautrain network, both north and south, further underscores our intention to achieve this goal,” Minister Creecy added.
In collaboration with the City of Johannesburg and the rugby union at Emirates Park Stadium, PRASA and Gautrain have ensured that fans will enjoy a safe, hassle-free transport experience. After the match, passengers can return to Park Station via the PRASA train service and then continue their journey on the Gautrain or utilize e-hailing services from the designated area at PRASA’s Umjantshi Head Office.
E-hailing services will be available for drop-off and pick-up at PRASA’s secure, well-lit zone at Umjantshi Head Office on Wolmarans Street, from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Additionally, safe and secure parking will be offered at the Rissik Street entrance to Park Station, with limited spaces available at R50 for the day.
The Gauteng Provincial Government, as the host province, supports this initiative as a step towards promoting the use of public transport for major events, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
