Focus sectors in 2024SESSIONS THAT INFLUENCE CHANGE

Meticulously crafted to ignite inspiration and impart knowledge through exciting real-life examples of blended finance transactions and structured deals, providing participants with valuable lessons from tangible achievements, identifying creative solutions and untapped areas for innovation and expansion, setting the stage to transform opportunities into impactful realities.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Africa is poised for a renewable energy transformation, aiming to meet up to 76% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2040. Significant investments in solar, wind, and hydropower are driving this change, despite historically low global investment levels. Meeting their needs with sustainable sources of energy is key to the continent’s socio-economic development.

GREEN TRANSPORT

Africa's urban population is set to grow significantly, with a projected 79% increase in passenger transport demand by 2050. This rapid urbanisation highlights the urgent need for sustainable transportation solutions to address congestion and pollution. By 2025, the continent is expected to see a substantial rise in electric vehicles (EVs), driven by over 4% annual urban population growth. Embracing e-mobility is crucial for reducing carbon emissions, improving urban air quality, and decreasing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Africa generates approximately 180 million tons of waste annually, with only 11% properly disposed of in sanitary landfills. The rest is either openly dumped or burned, contributing significantly to environmental pollution and public health issues. As urban populations grow and waste generation increases, innovative and sustainable waste management practices are crucial.

WATER SERVICES

Despite significant improvements, over 400 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to basic drinking water. This crisis is exacerbated by inadequate investment in climate-resilient water infrastructure, which falls short of the estimated $66 billion needed annually to achieve water security. As urbanisation intensifies and climate change impacts water availability, innovative and sustainable water management practices are essential to ensure water security for all.

Sustainable Agriculture & Forestry

Africa's agricultural sector is providing livelihoods for 55% of the continent's workforce and contributing 23% to its GDP. However, sustainable agricultural practices are essential to meet the increasing food demand of a population expected to grow by one billion by 2050. Despite the challenges, Africa has the potential to become a global agricultural powerhouse, with its food and agriculture market projected to reach $1 trillion by 2030.

The Blue Economy

Africa’s Blue Economy has the potential to drive the continent’s future economic and sustainable development. It is emerging as a vital pillar for sustainable development, leveraging the continent's extensive marine and freshwater resources. With a coastline of over 30,000 kilometers, Africa's blue economy has the potential to significantly contribute to economic growth, food security, livelihoods, biodiversity, and resilience to the effects of climate change (the Blue Economy generated nearly US$300 billion for the African continent in 2018, creating 49 million jobs in the process.
