Commitment to Sustainable Business Practices

As we adopt a PPP Bottom-line philosophy to our business activities, awareness of our responsibility for a better tomorrow sees our project teams actively reducing their carbon footprint at each event and business connection we deliver.

Our Pledge to Sustainability

Our objective is to influence a better tomorrow for the continent of Africa and is why we wholeheartedly commit to making Africa's Green Economy Summit as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible. Every consideration is given towards achievable delivery details of the conference with this goal in mind, to reduce our environmental impact and contribute towards a greener future.

It is not always easy to apply sweeping changes to our delivery format, but we are on an upward curve of limiting our impact, with a target to deliver a net zero event in the coming years. Every element of our conference has been planned with sustainability in mind, from the transportation options we offer to the materials used in our conference stages, reduced waste and venue food options.

We strive to make this event as environmentally responsible as possible, and we hope to set an example for others to follow. By prioritising sustainability in our planning process, we can make a positive impact on both Africa's sustainability future and the health of our planet.

We are proud to take this step towards a sustainable future, and looks forward to working alongside Go Green Africa to make it a reality.

COCT Is Going Green

Cape Town, along with other cities in South Africa and worldwide, has committed to achieving carbon neutrality and climate resilience by 2050. Reducing global warming is key.

These targets can only be reached through significant transitions in urban form, energy sources, transportation and resource efficiency. Key elements are cleaning up our sources of electricity, making the built environment more efficient and the electrification of transport. Download the COCT Climate Action Plan Summary here.

Our Venue: Century City Convention Centre (CCCC)

As sustainability is both a moral obligation and a strategic imperative, the CCCC places great importance on integrating economic, social, and environmental sustainability into every aspect of its operations.

Water

All of the CCCC's properties have dual plumbing systems, which means that they are able to use treated effluent water to flush their toilets – reducing the use of potable water and recycling the water they do use, saving up to 50% per flush.

These measures have helped them to save over 2 million litres of fresh water since they opened their doors.

Electricity

The CCCC has installed a solar energy system on the centre’s rooftop. The complete solar PV system at CCCC consists of over 800 photovoltaic modules split over two roofs, totalling 260 kWp in size. The system is expected to generate enough clean electricity annually to reduce carbon emissions of the centre by 17 %. Since it’s commissioning in July 2017, the solar PV system has produced over 800 000 kWh of clean electricity, saving over 700 tons of Carbon Emissions.

Waste

The CCCC sorts their waste onsite, after which it gets sent off to be reused or recycled.

All of our compostable waste, leftover food and waste from our kitchen gets vermicomposted by Pandae Green Solutions and turned into nutrient-rich compost – reducing waste to landfills by up to 40%.

Our Eco-Conscious Approach to Event Planning

To reduce our environmental impact and create a better future for all, we incorporate sustainable practices at every step of the way.

Reduced Waste

No paper printed event catalogue or programmes. Our event guides are accessed digitally by attendees. Exhibitors are suggested to provide digital links to marketing promotional materials. All event marketing and construction materials are carefully sorted to recycle or upcycle during event breakdown. Attendee badges are sourced from recycled paper and lanyards recyclable when sourced directly.

Recycle Bins

Active awareness from attendees is encouraged and we provide multiple locations for recycle bins around the venue. CTICC provides reduced waste packaging on food service items. Delegate bags and lanyards can be dropped off in dedicated upcycle bins at the exit to be distributed to school kids in the townships.

Bags Going Green

Speaker and delegate bags are made from recycled PVC and waxed with sustainable material. An initiative to support job creation as ladies in the under privileged communities manufacture the bags by hand. Our logos sewn individually with recyclable material. Speaker gifts are sourced ethically and from sustainable materials.

New Stand Build Materials

A number of locations and feature areas are created using the latest technology in environmental stand construction, Xanita Board. An engineered fibreboard manufactured from fibres recovered from recycled used cardboard boxes. Xanita core is decorated with various surface finishes, including digital print ready kraft paper liners, and has a usable 3yr lifespan.
