Melissa Rowlston is South Africa’s first female Shopify Expert and one of the country’s longest-standing ecommerce specialists. Since 2009 she has built more than 100 online stores for brands ranging from SodaStream and iStore Africa to fast-growing independents like Kixi and Triple Orange. She was named SA’s Top E-Commerce Entrepreneur in 2018, and her agency’s work has been nominated for multiple Bookmarks. She runs Maverick Marketing & Web, a Johannesburg-based Shopify agency for owner-led brands that treat ecommerce as a commercial discipline, not a design exercise. That view comes from experience: in 2009 she launched her own online store, at a time when local infrastructure barely supported it. Before ecommerce, Melissa was a journalist and managing editor at Business Report and was part of the founding team of Daily Maverick. Her insights have since been featured in Business Report, BizCommunity, Women&Home and Daily Maverick. She speaks regularly at E-Commerce Live and LeaderEx, and on podcasts and expert panels, focusing on what is working in South African ecommerce now, what isn’t, and where brands are losing revenue without realising it.
