Overview

The Mzimvubu Hydro Project is a hydroelectrical and water supply project. Phase 1: construction of two low dams (less than 30m high) equiped with turbines producing 44MW base load power and 308MW peak hours power through pump-storage. Phase 2: construction of a major dam (225m high), producing 220MW base load power, 1540MW peak hours power through pump-storage, and 900 million m3 of water for irrigation and water supply to the existing network.

Why Investing

1
Critical Renewable Energy & Water Infrastructure
The project addresses Southern Africa’s urgent energy and water needs by providing reliable base-load renewable electricity alongside water supply, supporting the transition away from coal.
2
Enables Greater Renewable Energy Integration
Its energy-storage capacity can store excess solar and wind power during low-demand periods and release it during peak hours, helping optimise the wider renewable energy system.
3
Proven Viability & Long-Term Security
Independent pre-feasibility and financial modelling indicate that both phases are economically viable, while the 40-year Water Use License provides important long-term regulatory security.
