This is a preview of the themes Chaminda Gunasekera, Managing Director, Asia Pacific at SkyNet Worldwide Express, will explore in his upcoming appearance at Converge Africa 2026 Africa 2026.
For years, digital commerce has focused on the visible parts of the journey. The interface. The checkout. The payment experience. The promise of speed and convenience. These are the elements brands have worked hard to refine, and rightly so. But as commerce becomes more connected across borders, it is becoming increasingly clear that the real differentiator lies elsewhere.
A seamless online transaction means very little if the physical execution behind it fails.
When a customer places an order, the sale may happen instantly, but fulfilment happens in the real world. It happens across customs environments, transport networks, delivery systems, and return channels. That is where complexity enters the picture. And that is where trust is either reinforced or lost.
Chaminda’s talk centres on a simple but important idea: the future of eCommerce will not be shaped by digital experience alone. It will be shaped by execution.
That means moving beyond the sale itself and looking at the full operational journey that follows. It means thinking about visibility, infrastructure, coordination, and reliability as part of the customer experience, not as separate back-end concerns.
At SkyNet, this is what we refer to as the execution layer. It is the layer that connects the digital front end to the physical reality behind it. It is what makes cross-border trade feel not only possible, but dependable.
If the execution layer is about making global commerce work better, then SkyPoint represents one of the clearest examples of where that thinking is heading next.
SkyPoint is more than a prepaid online courier platform. By removing the barriers of account setup, paperwork, and complexity, it makes local and international shipping simpler, faster, and more immediate.
That matters because the future of cross-border trade will not be shaped only by large-scale retailers and established exporters. It will also be shaped by smaller businesses, entrepreneurs, and independent sellers who need access to reliable logistics without the operational burden that has traditionally come with it.
In that sense, SkyPoint is not just about convenience. It makes SkyNet’s network more usable, flexible, and commercially relevant to a wider market.
SkyNet’s partnership with A2Pay strengthens that accessibility even further, giving the business access to more than 6,000 counters across townships throughout South Africa and creating the country’s largest township courier counter network. Through SkyPoint’s integration with the A2Pay POS system, these counters serve both as walk-in shipping points and as convenient collection and returns locations for e-commerce customers. That means simpler bookings, easier payments, and more flexible access to sending, collecting, and returning packages close to where people live and work.
One of the biggest barriers to better cross-border commerce is fragmentation. Traditional logistics models often rely on multiple service providers, disconnected systems, and limited visibility across the journey. The result is delays, uncertainty, and unnecessary friction for merchants and customers alike.
To build a stronger future for African eCommerce, those silos need to be broken down. What is needed is a more integrated approach. One where physical infrastructure and digital integration work together, and where the logistics experience is as seamless as the transaction that triggered it.
That thinking has shaped SkyNet’s recent strategic moves, particularly in the way the business is strengthening access to key global trade hubs.
A major example of this is SkyNet’s exclusive strategic partnership with Singapore Post, effective 1 January 2026. Through this partnership, Singapore Post represents the SkyNet brand in Singapore, combining local delivery strength with SkyNet’s international express and eCommerce capabilities.
The collaboration creates a stronger gateway between Asia Pacific and the rest of the world. Central to this is the use of Singapore Post’s Airmail Transit Centre as a customs-bonded transhipment hub in Singapore, designed to improve connectivity and speed for regional and global eCommerce flows.
Customers benefit from a single technology platform that provides access to over 190 destinations, along with Delivered Duty Paid options to simplify international shipping. Dedicated facilities for returns quality control and e-fulfilment also make it easier for brands to manage both orders and returns more efficiently.
The same principle applies beyond Asia. SkyNet has also focused on strengthening high-volume airfreight connectivity through its partnership with Hellmann Worldwide Logistics and the launch of the cross-border eCommerce product, nearNear. Together, these moves strengthen the infrastructure behind global trade. But crucially, platforms like SkyPoint are what translate that infrastructure into something more usable for the market.
That is what makes SkyPoint such an important part of the story. It brings the power of global integration closer to the customer.
Chaminda’s will also speak on sustainability as part of the execution story. As SkyNet works towards NetZero, the focus is on measurable emissions tracking, customer carbon reporting, and a longer-term transition toward lower-emission deliveries and fleet operations. Because future-ready logistics must be responsible as well as efficient.
Digital commerce has done a remarkable job of connecting consumers to products and payment systems to transactions. But the real challenge, and the real opportunity, lies in what happens next.
The businesses that will lead in the next chapter of eCommerce will not simply be the ones with the best website or the smoothest checkout. They will be the ones who understand how to deliver on the promise that the digital experience makes.
That means mastering the execution layer. It also means making that layer more accessible, more intelligent, and more sustainable.
These are the ideas Chaminda Gunasekera will unpack in more detail at Converge Africa 2026, where the focus will be on how integrated logistics infrastructure, customer-facing innovation like SkyPoint, and a more sustainable operating model can help shape a more connected and more resilient future for African eCommerce.
