CAPE TOWN, South Africa – November 18, 2025 – In an exclusive interview with Elodie Ashdown, Investment Project Lead at VUKA Group, Dr. William Makwinja, Technical Lead at Phambili Energy (Pty) Limited, unveiled his company’s groundbreaking approach to sustainable biomass conversion.

● Eradicating Alien Invasive Plants (AIPs) and Water Conservation: A significant portion of Phambili Energy’s feedstock comes from AIPs such as black wattle. These non-indigenous trees consume vast amounts of groundwater, depleting vital resources for agriculture and natural ecosystems. “By eradicating them, we are making the land available for agriculture and/or for appropriate forestry that will preserve groundwater,” Makwinja explained. ● Soil Health and Food Security: The biochar produced is further processed into bio-fertilisers. In many African regions, soils are degraded and over-reliant on chemical fertilisers that leach into groundwater. Phambili’s biochar-based fertilisers offer a sustainable alternative. “Our biochar-based fertiliser is very good for soil rejuvination,” Makwinja noted. ” Biochar-based fertilisers minimize the leaching through its slow-release characteristics, preserving the quality of ground water. In addition, it also helps with inhabiting microbes essential for soil rejuvenation. Thus, these fertilisers support food security sustainably..”
● Rural Economic Empowerment: Phambili Energy’s operational philosophy prioritises rural areas, strategically locating plants where biomass is abundant. Innovative technology and product differentiation
At the heart of Phambili Energy’s solution is a research-based pyrolysis process, which allows for remarkable flexibility and customisation. Unlike generic biochar producers, Phambili Energy can tailor its output. “Our pyrolysis process is rooted in extensive research, allowing us to precisely tailor the characteristics of the bio-oil, syngas and biochars to desired specific applications. Makwinja explained. This capability extends to its second stage products like the fertilisers, bio-decarbonizing pellets. And the associated specialised binders.
One notable application of their biochar is in decarbonising industrial processes. “Our biochar has been processed into a specialised pellet that we’ve been testing in collabolation with a potential client for over two years. The will be used in place of some of the anthracite or cocking coal helping with the client’s decarbonization projects,” Makwinja revealed. This direct application in smelters offers a tangible pathway for heavy industry to reduce its carbon footprint.
Beyond biochar, the pyrolysis process also yields bio-oils which are further processed into green chemicals and bio-deisil. The bio-diesel is used either for electricity generation or for commercial diesel blending (after completing compliance testing and obtaining government approval). The green chemicals are currently being used in the making of the agricultural inputs (crop bio-stimulants, animal feed, herbicides and as additives to the biochar-based fertilisers).
The syngas, which is composed of several gases has been tested and found satisfactory for electricity generation through a specialised bio-gas generator. In addition, we have on-going research for the conversion of these gases into sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).
Scalability and growth potential across Africa
Phambili Energy’s modular plant design is a cornerstone of its ambitious growth strategy. Makwinja emphasised the ease of replication: “Our business model is easily scalable because we’ve designed the plant into a compact, small unit that requires only 30 tons a day raw material input. Thus, scalability is only through the addition of new plants, either at the same location if material permits or at other sites. We have further re-designed the plant so that it is containerised to allow for rapid deployment without requiring large building, especially in the rural areas we operate.
The company has already garnered significant interest beyond South Africa. “After South Africa, we have been approached by colleagues from Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana and Senegal for their invasive sea weeds , ,” Makwinja shared. This broad African interest confirms the widespread applicability and demand for Phambili Energy’s solutions, from agricultural waste to marine invasive species like Sargassum seaweed.
