Ethiopia is rapidly emerging as a frontrunner in Africa’s electric vehicle (EV) transition, with ambitious government initiatives transforming the country’s transportation landscape. The nation’s commitment to sustainable mobility is evident in its expanding charging infrastructure, with plans to install charging stations every 50-120km throughout the country in 2025, addressing one of the key barriers to EV adoption.
Electric Buses Revolutionise Public Transport in Addis Ababa
In a landmark development this March, the Addis Ababa City Administration introduced 100 electric buses to the capital’s transportation network. These vehicles, assembled by local manufacturer Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex using Chinese components, feature advanced Intelligent Transportation System and Fare Collection System technologies. Operating along dedicated Bus Rapid Transit lanes, these zero-emission buses provide residents with faster, more comfortable commuting options while addressing the city’s public transportation shortage.
“These electric buses are environmentally friendly with zero emissions and offer a comfortable ride with ample capacity for passengers,” noted Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime.
The country currently offers three distinct charging options: home charging for private EV owners, public service stations in government facilities, and commercial charging stations operated by private companies. This diversified approach ensures widespread accessibility for different user needs.
Ethio Telecom Accelerates EV Charging Capacity
Further bolstering the EV ecosystem, telecom giant Ethio Telecom unveiled its second ultra-fast EV charging station in Addis Ababa in April 2025. The facility features 16 high-capacity chargers compatible with both European-standard EVs and those requiring EU-standard fast charging. Together with the company’s existing infrastructure, the network can now accommodate 32 vehicles simultaneously, significantly reducing waiting times for EV users.
“This initiative aligns with Ethio Telecom’s vision as a leading digital solutions provider and is part of our Digital Ethiopia journey,” said CEO Frehiwot Tamiru at the station’s unveiling.
Toward a Greener, Locally Driven Transport Future
The Ethiopian government reports over 100,000 electric vehicles currently operating nationwide, with ambitious targets to reach 500,000 within a decade—replacing 95 percent of conventional fuel-powered vehicles. This transition promises significant environmental benefits through reduced emissions while creating opportunities for local manufacturing and job creation in the emerging EV sector.
The rapid development of Ethiopia’s EV infrastructure demonstrates how developing nations can effectively embrace green mobility technologies while supporting local manufacturing capabilities.
