Nyambala started not in energy, but telecoms, “fascinated by the idea that a signal could actually go through the air and get received on the other end,” she told ESI Africa Editor-In-Chief Nicolette Pombo-van Zyl in an interview as an Elites Leader for 2024.
She worked in telecoms for four years before taking up an opening at the largest power generator in East Africa, the Kenya Electricity Generating Company, launching a career in energy.
“Telecoms was a sector with a lot of sense of urgency and a lot of speedy response. We needed to respond quickly because we had to be up and running all the time. And that is what shaped my career in energy when I moved on with that, supporting the energy sector to reduce blackouts and downtimes,” explained Nyambala.
Some of the challenges she identified as blocking Africa’s goal of electrifying 100% of its population are supportive legislation and the speed of execution.
Since her company operates in eight different countries, she has a broad understanding of the state of legislative frameworks for development work.
“You find that some of the countries do not have a well-developed legislative system to support development work.
“Subsequently, the developers take a lot of time moving from one stage to the next,” she said.
