South African cabinet recently approved the e-mobility white paper which underscores the country’s commitment to transition towards cleaner and more energy-efficient mobility solutions.
“Whilst working within the electric mobility sector for over 10-years, lobbying for policy reform takes quite some effort, however these are some developments that we await on,” says Hiten Parmar, Executive Director at Electric Mission.
This white paper signals the government’s commitment to the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and other eco-friendly modes of transport. “The policy supports investments in the development and expansion of new and existing manufacturing plants to support the production of electric vehicles in the country,” according to cabinet.
It also details a plan to become part of the global shift from internal combustion engines to new technology vehicles (electric vehicles). This milestone not only aligns with global efforts to combat climate change but also positions South Africa to reap the economic and environmental benefits of a burgeoning electric vehicle market.
South Africa’s automotive sector plays a pivotal role in job and creation. With added mineral resources on the continent, the country will become a key driver of electric vehicle adoption, be the hub of localising EV manufacturing and suppling vehicles parts across the EV value chain.
