Uber Boosts South Africa’s Economy with R17 Billion Contribution

Uber’s recent Impact Report for South Africa has unveiled the significant economic benefits the company has brought to the nation. In 2023 alone, transport and delivery services facilitated through the Uber platform contributed an estimated R17 billion to the South African economy, accounting for 3.5% of the total transport sector’s economic output.

Empowering Individuals and Businesses

The report highlights how Uber has empowered individuals and businesses alike. Over R2.3 billion in annual earnings have been generated for drivers and delivery people, providing them with flexible income opportunities. This flexibility, valued at R1.4 billion, allows them to work on their own terms and schedules.

Uber prides itself on the way they reimagine the way they move people and goods and the results reflected a positive impact with food, retail, tourism, and nightlife sectors. By connecting local businesses with a wider customer base through delivery services, Uber has generated an additional R1.6 billion for these businesses and entrepreneurs.

Enhancing Safety and Convenience

Uber has also played a crucial role in enhancing safety and convenience for South Africans. The report reveals that over 76% of riders believe that ridesharing platforms like Uber are essential for safe nighttime travel, particularly for women. Additionally, food and grocery deliveries through Uber have saved South Africans over 12.7 million hours each year.

A Bright Future for South Africa

With its commitment to innovation and positive impact, Uber is poised to continue driving economic growth and social progress in South Africa. By creating over one million economic opportunities, Uber is empowering individuals and businesses to achieve financial stability and success.

“Uber is more than a platform for rides or food deliveries – we’re dedicated to creating lasting value for all who live in South Africa,” said Ofentse Madisha, Uber’s Head of Public Policy in South Africa. “Through the creation of earning opportunities, enhanced safety, and increased convenience, we aim to play our part in building a stronger, more connected South Africa.”

As Uber continues to evolve and expand its services, it remains committed to its mission of reimagining the way the world moves, and South Africa is set to benefit from this vision for many years to come.
