The uYilo e-Mobility Summit 2024, taking place in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, brought together industry leaders, government officials, and academic experts to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in the country’s electric mobility sector.
Government’s Role in Accelerating EV Adoption
The South African government, through the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), has demonstrated a strong commitment to support the development of the EV ecosystem. The DSTI’s Energy Storage Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Initiative is focused on advancing battery technology and other critical components of the EV value chain.
In particular, Dr. Cosmas Chiteme mentions a battery program they recently formed to create a platform for linking South African researchers in the private sector, entrepreneurs, investors and commercial partners. These partners include the CSIR, UWC University, UK Council of South Africa and Nelson Mandela University to accelerate the research and development of battery technology.
“This is aimed at creating a healthy pipeline of skills that will then support the local production of value-added components for electric vehicles, in line with the minerals beneficiation master plan,” said Dr. Chiteme.

Collaboration is Key
The uYilo e-Mobility Summit highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and academia. Dr.Cosmas Chiteme, Director of Power Directorate from the DSTI encouraged working together to overcome challenges, accelerate innovation, and position South Africa as a leading player in the global EV market.
“The overall goal is to make sure that as a country, we play along the full value chain of electric vehicles, starting from the processing of minerals, producing battery precursor materials, manufacturing of batteries, building components, assembling and producing electric vehicles in South Africa,” said Dr. Chiteme.
As the EV revolution gathers pace, South Africa is well-positioned to capitalize on this opportunity. By leveraging its abundant natural resources, skilled workforce, and supportive government policies, the country can drive sustainable economic growth and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
