Roam Powers Sustainable Mobility in the Global South with Locally-Made Electric Vehicles

September 19, 2024

Cape Town, South Africa, 10 September 2024 – Roam, a leading innovator in electric mobility solutions, is spearheading a sustainable transportation revolution in the Global South, tackling a critical need for clean, affordable, and locally manufactured motorcycles and buses.  The company’s vision centers on addressing the region’s growing dependence on motorcycles, a mode of transport that contributes significantly to air pollution and offering a cleaner alternative while fostering economic development.

The Global South is experiencing a rapid increase in motorcycle ownership, fueled by population growth and urbanization. However, this trend comes with a significant environmental cost, as motorcycles are among the most polluting forms of transportation. Roam recognises this challenge and is committed to providing a solution that benefits both people and the planet.

Advocating for a Cleaner Future

“The transition to electric mobility is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about creating a more sustainable and equitable future,” said Hans van Toor, Director of Strategy of Roam. “We believe in the power of electric vehicles to drive social and economic development, and we are dedicated to making them accessible to everyone in the Global South.”

Roam’s commitment to the region is not just words but actions, backed by substantial investments. The company has already poured $30 million into the Kenyan green automotive sector, a testament to its dedication to local impact.  This investment is set to grow even further, with an additional $50 million allocated over the next 24 months.  This investment will power the local manufacturing of electric motorcycles and buses, ensuring that Roam’s vehicles are not only built for the region but also contribute to its economic well-being.

“We are proud to be a leader in the local manufacturing of electric vehicles,” adds Hans. “Our commitment to local sourcing not only creates jobs and boosts the economy, but also ensures that our vehicles are designed specifically for the needs of the region.”

Building Strategic Partnerships

Roam’s impact extends beyond its products. The company understands that a successful transition to electric mobility requires a holistic approach, which is why it prioritises building strategic partnerships.  These collaborations span the entire value chain, from clients and investors to academic institutions.

“We are fortunate to have such a strong network of partners who are committed to our mission,” mentioned Hans. “Their support has been instrumental in helping us scale our operations and reach new markets.”

Roam’s commitment to collaboration extends beyond individual partnerships. The company works actively with universities and research institutions in Kenya, including Strathmore University, the University of Nairobi, and JKUAT, to develop talent and foster knowledge sharing.  These collaborations ensure that the skills and expertise required to support the electric mobility transition are readily available in the region.

Roam’s partnerships extend beyond Kenya, encompassing collaborations with universities in Stellenbosch and Colorado State University, institutions recognized for their expertise in electric mobility development. These partnerships underscore Roam’s dedication to learning from and contributing to a global network of experts, ensuring that its solutions are at the forefront of innovation.

Recognising the importance of industry advocacy, Roam has also partnered with the Kenya Association of Manufacturers. This collaboration aims to create a more conducive environment for electric mobility in Kenya, addressing policy hurdles and promoting the benefits of clean transportation.

Leading the Way in Innovation

Roam’s dedication to sustainability and local development is driving a significant shift in the Global South. The company is not just building electric vehicles, it is building a future where clean mobility is accessible and affordable for all.  Roam’s commitment to locally-made products, strong partnerships, and a focus on knowledge sharing positions it to be a leading force in the electric mobility industry, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future for the entire region.
