Dakar, Senegal – September 17, 2024 – Mbay Mobility, a pioneering startup, is transforming the transportation landscape in West Africa with its innovative approach to supplying and financing affordable electric vehicles (EVs). Founded by Matthew Sellar, a seasoned economist, diplomat and entrepreneur, Mbay Mobility is addressing the region’s critical air pollution and climate change concerns, while also creating economic opportunities and fostering financial inclusion.
A vision driven by a passion for sustainable solutions
Matthew Sellar’s journey to founding Mbay Mobility was deeply rooted in his personal observations during his time working at the UK embassy in Dakar. “Witnessing the overwhelming air pollution caused by traditional vehicles, I felt a sense of urgency to find a solution,” says Sellar. “The air quality was simply not sustainable. The people of Dakar, and of other urban centers in West Africa, deserve better.”
With a keen eye for innovation, Sellar began researching EV technology and the potential for its adoption in the region. He quickly realised that EVs could be a game-changer, not just for transportation but for the future of West Africa. “There was a clear opportunity to address a growing problem and create a more sustainable future” Sellar observes.
A comprehensive approach to sustainable mobility
Mbay Mobility’s approach to sustainable mobility extends far beyond simply selling EVs. The company is building a comprehensive ecosystem that empowers individuals and businesses to embrace clean transportation:
Financial inclusion through EV ownership
One of Mbay Mobility’s most significant contributions is its commitment to financial inclusion. In West Africa, traditional investment opportunities like savings accounts, stocks and shares are nearly non-existent and require substantial capital. This means people who work hard and manage their finances well simply do not have anything they can invest in. Mbay Mobility’s lease-to-own model opens doors for individuals and small businesses to access EVs, to use them commercially and benefit from the economic opportunities they offer.
“We’re tackling the barriers to financial inclusion head-on,” states Sellar. “We recognise that many individuals and businesses lack access to traditional investment opportunities. Our program allows them to invest in their future and contribute to a cleaner environment.”
Driving sustainable transportation at scale
Mbay Mobility is ambitious in its goals, aiming to deploy 33,000 electric vehicles across major urban centers in West Africa by 2033. “Our vision is a West Africa where clean transportation is the norm,” says Sellar. “We are committed to scaling up our operations and making a significant impact on the region’s air quality.”
The company is currently in the process of expanding its fleet, installing charging infrastructure, and developing its software platform. Matthew is confident about the future, “We’re moving forward with a sense of urgency and excitement,” he says. “We are dedicated to making Mbay Mobility a driving force for sustainable transportation in West Africa.”
Mbay Mobility is not only transforming transportation in West Africa, but it is also setting a powerful example for sustainable development in the region. By prioritising clean energy, promoting local entrepreneurship, and fostering financial inclusion, Mbay Mobility is leading the way to a more prosperous and environmentally responsible future in the region.
