Digital Revolution: How Apps Are Transforming African Transportation

Africa’s transportation landscape is undergoing a remarkable digital transformation, with
innovative mobile applications revolutionising how millions of commuters navigate their daily
journeys across the continent. This shift represents more than technological advancement—it’s
reshaping urban mobility and creating new economic opportunities.

The Rise of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS)

Leading this revolution are pioneering platforms like WhereIsMyTransport, which mapped over
85,000 km of routes across 22 African cities, including Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
Meanwhile, Moja Ride is transforming public transport in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where it serves
over 35,000 share-taxis and 8,000 minibuses through its integrated ticketing and payment
system.

These platforms exemplify the broader Mobility-as-a-Service trend, where fragmented transport
services are unified through digital ecosystems. Users can now plan, book, and pay for various
transport modes—from buses to ride-shares—through integrated mobile applications.

Country-Specific Innovations

In South Africa, WhereIsMyTransport has mapped nine major cities including Cape Town,
Johannesburg, and Durban, with their datasets powering the MyCiti and Gautrain apps. Côte
d’Ivoire showcases how Moja Ride is disrupting traditional transport in Abidjan by digitising
payments for the city’s extensive informal transport network. Meanwhile, cities like Maputo in
Mozambique use mobility data to inform fuel subsidy decisions, while Douala in Cameroon are
in the process of leveraging transport data for urban development planning.

Technology Driving Change

Three key technological areas are emerging as game-changers in African transportation:

1. Smart ticketing systems are eliminating cash transactions and reducing boarding times,
making public transport more efficient and accessible. Commuters can now purchase and
validate tickets digitally, streamlining the entire journey experience.
2. Route optimisation technology leverages real-time traffic data and machine learning
algorithms to suggest the fastest, most cost-effective travel routes. This not only saves time
but also reduces fuel consumption and environmental impact.
3. Transport data analytics enable cities and service providers to understand passenger
patterns, optimise services, and make informed infrastructure investments. This datadriven approach is crucial for developing sustainable urban mobility solutions.

Looking Forward

As smartphone penetration continues growing across Africa, these digital transportation
solutions are becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread. The transformation
represents a leap toward smarter, more connected cities where mobility is seamless,
affordable, and sustainable—fundamentally changing how Africans commute and interact with
their urban environments.
