Chad: 100 people to reap benefits of solar PV mini-grid

August 27, 2024

A community in Chad is celebrating the installation and official inauguration of a solar PV (photovoltaic) mini-grid system equipped with battery storage.

The standalone ground-mounted 78kWp solar PV mini-grid system is equipped with a 324kWh battery bank storage using solar modules, energy storage inverters and Lithium-ion batteries.

The remote monitoring system was installed to provide real-time information about the system. One of the key features of the PV mini-grid is its distribution line, which extends the reach of electricity to communities far from the main power grid.

Equipped with advanced technology, the PV mini-grid will ensure high efficiency and increased durability, serving as a model for replication and scalability across Chad and beyond.

“Together, we can build a future where every community has access to clean, reliable energy while preserving our environment for future generations,” said Minister of Water and Energy, Passalé Kanabé Marcelin, in his speech inaugurating the project.

A step toward 30% electricity access in Chad by 2030

According to the International Energy Agency, Chad had an electricity access rate of only 4% in 2021, holding one of the lowest electricity access rates in the world.

The country also relies heavily on a fossil fuel source – namely oil – to produce its energy. This project is therefore a step in the right direction to meet the country’s 2030 electricity access target of 30% and increase the country’s renewable energy uptake.

In his speech, the Minister spoke about the symbolic significance of the PV system, stating: “We are determined to promote renewable energy as a pillar of our development.”

“This photovoltaic system is not just an energy solution; it is a symbol of progress for our country.”

His words reflect the government’s recognition of renewable energy as a driver of progress and a cornerstone of Chad’s future.

The mini-grid will benefit more than 100 people in the community, schools and medical institutions. This will transform the energy landscape of the region and provide much-needed electricity to areas that have suffered from energy shortages.

This event marks a milestone in Chad’s efforts to expand access to clean and reliable energy.

The inauguration ceremony was also graced by representatives from the government and local community members.

FAQs on mini-grids

What is the concept of a mini-grid?

A mini-grid is a set of small-scale electricity generators interconnected to a distribution network that supplies electricity to a small, localised group of customers.

What is an example of a mini-grid?

A mini-grid can include diesel generators, hydropower systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, wind turbines, biomass-powered generators, geothermal-powered generators or a mix of these.

What is the configuration of a mini-grid?

Mini-grids can have three basic configurations: alternating current (AC) coupled, direct current (DC) coupled or hybrid (both AC and DC).

What is the difference between a mini-grid and a micro-grid?

Micro-grids are used by small residential or commercial consumers. Mini-grids are larger configurations which can power commercial outlets, universities, factories and even islands, according to the International Electrotechnical Commission.
