Veer Ramnarain, Acting Head: Electricity Unit at eThekwini Municipality will be a speaker at Enlit Africa on exploring alternative revenue streams at municipalities.
While South African municipalities are all exploring various ways to mitigate for the effects of climate change, sourcing the funding to implement measures is challenging.
“eThekwini has however successfully sourced funding grid connection capacity studies as part of the C40 initiative, but a lot more funding, either from National Treasury or grant finding sources is required to implement the solutions,” said Ramnarain.
When it comes to dealing with extreme weather events in the recent years, eThekwini Municipality has experienced repeat extreme weather conditions such as severe flooding, extreme tornado-like winds and extreme temperature rises.
“As Engineers we have a good network of individuals who can work together in finding solutions to climatic changes. New network designs and standards are being developed to mitigate this risk,” he explained.
Watch the video to find out some of the engineering solutions the municipality is currently considering to mitigate climate change.
