A solar PV plant with a battery energy storage system in Togo is set to expand its capacity to provide electricity to thousands more households.
At present, the Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Solar PV Plant has 70MW and 4MWh installed capacity.
Renewable energy project developer AMEA Power confirmed that they recently signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) and concession agreement with La Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET) to expand the capacity of the solar project to 100MW and 14MWh BESS.
The solar plant is part of Togo’s National Development Plan, with the objective of providing universal access to electricity by 2030.
Located in the village of Blitta, the project, which is the country’s first utility-scale renewable energy project, currently powers up to 222,000 households.
Togo’s electricity access rate rose from 50% in 2020 to 68% in 2023. According to the Presidency, the surge is due to several electrification initiatives.
The country’s population in 2024 stands at around 9.5 million people.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) says the country has a relatively diversified energy mix and more than 13% of its final energy consumption comes from renewable supplies of energy, mainly hydropower.
Increasing solar energy output in Togo
The government of Togo has provided the country’s Energy Ministry with 57 billion FCFA (around $95 million) to propel universal energy access.
The country imports the majority of its electricity from neighbours Nigeria and Ghana.
To increase its generation capacity, Togolese authorities are planning to:
- Install 555,000 solar kits
- Install a minimum of 315 mini solar grids
- Connect 960 new localities to the network
- Provide electrification to 400,000 households currently not electrified
- Install 108MW or more of additional generation on the network
