First time attending the South African Transport Conference — and what an experience!
Newly appointed Conference Producer at Smarter Mobility Africa, Sudeshnee Pillay shares her reflections from the 2025 Southern African Transport Conference. From e-bus masterclasses to infrastructure innovation, she explores key lessons, inspiring conversations, and the sector’s shared commitment to sustainable and inclusive mobility.

As I step into my new role as Conference Producer for Smarter Mobility Africa; attending the Southern African Transport Conference (SATC) has been the perfect immersion into the world of transport and mobility. I walked into SATC with curiosity, questions, and a notepad ready and left with insights, inspiration, and new appreciation for the work being done to move Southern Africa forward.

From infrastructure innovation to sustainable mobility, the conversations were eye-opening. It was a privilege to learn from and meet thought leaders, engineers, policy-makers, and fellow professionals who are all passionate about shaping the future of transport on the continent.

I spent the day jumping between sessions on electric bus operations and infrastructure development, and walked away inspired by the innovation and deep technical expertise in the room.

In the E-Bus Masterclass – hosted by UITP Africa; it became clear how multi-dimensional this transition is – from battery tech, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC), to charging infrastructure, driver training, and the complexities of operational planning. One key insight? E-buses aren’t just a swap-out for diesel — they require a total reimagining of systems, skills, and business models to support a more efficient and climate-friendly future.

On the infrastructure side, sessions tackled the drive for more data-informed, tech-enabled, and collaborative solutions was a common thread and incredibly motivating to witness.

Some key takeaways:

  • Integrated, people-centred planning is critical – Transport systems must go beyond infrastructure to truly serve communities.

  • Sustainability and resilience are non-negotiable – These are essential pillars for long-term transport development.

  • Innovation is happening – But stronger public-private collaboration is needed to scale and succeed.

  • Transport is more than movement – It’s about access, equity, and opportunity.

What stood out most was the shared commitment across sectors to find solutions that are not only efficient, but inclusive and future-ready.

It’s been exciting to be entering the space at such a pivotal time. Grateful for the warm and insightful welcome into this dynamic space — and excited for the road ahead.
