Speaking to ESI Africa, Belvana Abeli, Portfolio Manager for the Green Economy at Wesgro, highlighted the New Water Programme as central to Cape Town’s resilience efforts.
Under the programme, the province aims to secure 300 million litres of water per day from new sources by 2030, reducing reliance on rainfall-dependent supply systems.
Abeli adds that the broader target is to make Cape Town water resilient by 2040 ensuring long-term stability in the face of climate change.
To reach these goals, various interventions are being deployed, including groundwater harvesting, desalination, rainwater harvesting and several other supply schemes designed to diversify Cape Town’s water portfolio.
She said the lived experience shapes the urgency behind these efforts. “Lucky for the Western Cape, we are a province that did experience Day Zero, so we know what it’s like and we know how critical it is that we don’t go back there.”
