The Quadrilemma: Energy affordability, security, sustainability and social justice

Professor Vally Padayachee spoke to ESI Africa about rethinking South Africa’s energy future from a Quadrilemma perspective.

LISTEN

In the past much of our energy discourse has revolved around the Energy Trilemma which provides a foundational framework. However it often falls short in address the seemingly unique challenges we face in South Africa let alone in the rest of Africa as a whole.

The transition to an Energy Quadrilemma perspective is not just theoretical, it’s very much practical. It enables policymakers to devise strategies that are holistic and comprehensive, Padayachee explains.

The trilemma is balancing energy security, energy equity (affordability) and environmental sustainability. The fourth dimension in South Africa is the people aspect – taking social equity and justice into consideration.

“The Minister of Energy and and Electricity Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has been vocal about the shift in thinking, advocating for a quadrilemma approach that adds a fourth dimension that is social economic development,” explains Padayachee.

This holistic approach is crucial for South Africa as we rebuild and rethink our energy systems to be more resilient and future-ready, says the Professor.
