Egypt Advances Electric Bus Expansion Across Greater Cairo

Egypt is taking significant steps to scale up clean public transport, with new investments accelerating the deployment of electric buses across Greater Cairo. The programme forms part of a broader national push to reduce urban pollution, modernise mass transit systems, and strengthen Egypt’s long-term sustainability strategy.

The government has prioritised electric buses within wider transport reforms, focusing on routes that serve major population centres between Cairo and Giza. The initiative is supported by international financing institutions, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which recently approved funding for the procurement of new electric buses and related depot upgrades.

Officials say the expanded deployment is intended to relieve congestion, cut emissions, and offer more reliable mobility options for Cairo’s growing population. Egypt’s ongoing air-quality challenges have made the introduction of lower-emission transport solutions essential, and electric buses are expected to play a central role in future mobility planning.

The electric bus rollout builds on earlier pilots launched in Cairo, where locally assembled electric buses were first tested on high-frequency routes. These pilots demonstrated operational cost savings, lower energy consumption, and improved passenger comfort. Authorities are now prioritising the expansion of charging depots, maintenance training, and route optimisation to prepare for larger fleet integration.

The corridor between Cairo and Giza has been identified as a prime candidate for electrification due to heavy commuter volumes. Upgraded road infrastructure and the emergence of dedicated bus lanes are paving the way for a more efficient clean-transit network. The programme aligns with Egypt’s ambition to enhance the overall reliability of public transport, reduce journey times, and encourage a shift away from private vehicle use.

At the same time, electric mobility has become a strategic priority for Egypt’s industrial sector. Local manufacturing partnerships have already produced prototype electric buses within the country, signalling growing interest in domestic EV production. The government hopes this shift will strengthen Egypt’s automotive industry, create jobs, and attract foreign investment.

Challenges remain, including the need for more charging capacity, the integration of energy-management systems, and long-term financing for fleet expansion. However, officials maintain that electric buses represent a practical and scalable solution for Egypt’s urban transport needs.

With major infrastructure upgrades underway and financing in place, the expansion of electric buses across Greater Cairo marks a major step forward in Egypt’s energy-transition and sustainable mobility agenda.
