Visa and Rubicon Partner Revolutionize EV Charging in South Africa

Recently it was announced that a partnership between Visa and Rubicon, a leading electric vehicle charging network in South Africa, was sparked at the Smarter Mobility Africa 2024 summit.

This collaboration aims to revolutionize electric vehicle charging by introducing bank card payment terminals at Rubicon’s charging stations.

The new payment solution will allow EV drivers to conveniently charge their vehicles using their Standard Bank cards or digital wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay. This moves away from proprietary online accounts or Radio Frequency Identification cards (RFID)and simplifies the charging process to enhance the overall user experience.

Initially, the bank card payment terminals will be rolled out at six of Rubicon’s busiest DC fast charging stations. The success of this pilot phase will determine the expansion of the system to more charging stations across South Africa.

By embracing this innovative payment solution, Visa and Rubicon are paving the way for a more accessible and user-friendly electric vehicle charging infrastructure in South Africa. This partnership is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in driving the adoption of sustainable transportation.

The Smarter Mobility Africa summit served as a catalyst for this innovative partnership between Visa and Rubicon. The event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss the future of mobility in Africa. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, the summit highlighted the potential for transformative partnerships to address the continent’s transportation challenges.

Visa and Rubicon’s collaboration is a prime example of how such partnerships can drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions. By simplifying the payment process and expanding access to charging infrastructure, the two companies are working together to embrace the new urban era of mobility and add convenience for future electric vehicle owners in South Africa.
