China has been at the forefront of the Automotive’s technological developments, new energy vehicles and battery energy storage. Therefore, it was fitting for one of our advisory board members to visit the centre of this innovation. The visit included a local electric vehicle battery and charging station manufacturer, automobile museum and a university that focuses on automotive technology.
Central China’s Shiyan, a city in the North West of the province of Hubei, has been essential to the country’s industrial growth. With the establishment of six industrial parks in quick succession, the city has promoted the expansion of the automotive equipment, components, and new-energy vehicle (NEV) industries. Numerous businesses focused on the creation, manufacturing, and research of NEV components have been successfully drawn to the area. This has led to Shiyan being dubbed the “Detroit of China” by certain media outlets, but other Chinese cities have also been dubbed this.
The worldwide market will undergo a change thanks to China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sector. China now produces almost 70% of the world’s batteries thanks to a thorough electrification supply chain that it has built over the last ten years. From the extraction of raw materials to the production of batteries and car assembly, this vast supply chain covers it all.
It was interesting to see the number of NEVs on the road, with some of them making their way to the African continent soon. Chinese carmakers such as BYD, JAC and Chery are going through the investment procedures to introduce advanced technology and carry out localized production in Africa.
Hopefully all these developments will help improve Africa’s mobility challenges which range from lack of policies and standards to infrastructure challenges.
