The City of Joburg’s Transport Department launched Rea Vaya Phase 1C (a) on Thursday, 23 October 2025 at the Marlboro Community in Marlboro Gardens. This is a new route that will bring safe, affordable and reliable transport to the residents of Berea, Yeoville, Orange Groove, Cheltondale, Norwood, Balfour Park, Bramley, Wynberg, Alexandra, Marlboro, Athol, Sandton, Sandown, Longmeadow and Greenstone.
Johannesburg launched Rea Vaya Phase 1A in 2009 and Phase 1B in 2013 to mark a rapid transport system that is fast, safe and affordable to enable the majority of the residents and passengers to conveniently travel to places of work, schools, health, sporting and recreational facilities as well as access to economic and business opportunities of the Johannesburg CBD and Sandton with the introduction of Phase 1C (a).
Since its inception, Rea Vaya, a prime transport infrastructure and a smart city project, has become a backbone of Johannesburg’s economy and plays a significant role as part of the broader public transport system. In light of this, the City aims to provide a reliable public transport network, reduce congestion on public roads by a gradual shift or switch from private car users to the BRT system. Implemented in stages, the system’s Phase 1A, 1B and 1C are now fully integrated.
Phase 1C is heading to Alexandra and Sandton City with newly established 13 low flow stations, connecting interchanges, exclusive Rea Vaya bus and pedestrian bridge over the M1 along Lees street, a non-motorist creative and artistic bridge for walking and cycling between Alexandra and Sandton City alongside Grayston ridge. Service and self-service low flow stations will be used to access the Rea Vaya Phase 1C trunk route.
Already, all 13 of the 15 stations for the route have been completed. The construction of the remaining two stations, namely, the Sandton City station, located between Rivonia Road, West street and the Ghandi Square in the Joburg CBD will be completed early in 2026.
Three bridges, (1) Houghton bridge a modern, well-lit pedestrian bridge in Houghton (2) Grayston walking and cycling bridge and (3) Marlboro bus and pedestrian bridge have been completed. A dedicated cycling and walking pathway from Alexandra to Sandton, past the Pan Africa Mall, over Pretoria Main Road, through Wynberg across a dedicated bridge over the M1 and then through Sandown and ending at Sandton City is complete and is already use by the public.
Over and above, the Watt Interchange located close to Pan Africa Mall in Alexandra and Wynberg has been completed. The Watt Interchange forms part of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport System’s greater public transport connectivity in Wynberg and Alexandra for passengers to access other modes of public transport i.e. conveniently to connect from Rea Vaya BRT to minibus taxis, Metrobus and private buses.
The Selby depot is almost complete (90% completion) and will be used for bus parking, maintenance and administration offices of the bus operating companies. A public transport loop for all forms of public transport along West Street, Fifth Street, Rivonia Road, and Fredman Drive has been completed and will used by feeder buses to the trunk (T4) route.
Rea Vaya low entry new 68 buses
The 68 buses are operating during the interim phase until 141 buses are procured, manufactured and delivered for the 1 C (a) services in two years’ time.
