The Mali collective in the Kolondieba commune services 150 members, the majority of whom are middle-aged to senior women. By teaching members to automate water pumping, they can nourish their gardens and fields to support local farming businesses.
“The project provides 4-8kWh of off-grid solar PV to power hydraulic pumps. These automatically draw water from local wells for small farm irrigation in rural and remote areas.”
Mali currently has 78% of basic water coverage, and 80% of Malians are employed through farming, so this project’s off-grid hydraulic wells help build growth through practical solar PV solutions.
Each installation includes a solar power system, equipment and irrigation training, monthly subscriber energy use analysis, remote monitoring, GPS and customer service or equipment maintenance.
The project boasts one of the lowest investment rates for electrification in Mali. The project allows the solar system to be leased (from 25,000 Fcfa monthly) or purchased (from 2,5 million Fcfa), with associations and other partnerships encouraging lower prices which helps meet the needs of lower-income households.
Specifically, E-Longlife has partnered with the Association of Women Gardeners in Mali.
With the combination of solar power and digital technology, the project capitalises on the modernisation of agriculture to create opportunities for developing new businesses and jobs and furthering gender equality.
So far, the project has had a stable track record of creating new businesses by making sustainable electrification available.
Through its rental, purchase, or rent-to-own services, the project has used solar energy to electrify schools, health facilities, businesses and households, creating jobs and facilitating upgraded family lifestyles in rural populations. ESI
