Deerosh Maharaj

Executive Head - Energy, Infrastructure & Mining, Standard Bank

Deerosh Maharaj is a prominent South African banking executive, currently serving as the Executive Head for Energy, Infrastructure & Mining within Standard Bank South Africa’s, Business and Commercial Banking division. With over 12 years at the bank, he leads these three sector teams, leveraging his expertise in deal-making to assist clients across various sectors and business sizes in unlocking sustainable growth opportunities.

Maharaj has played a pivotal role in supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in adopting green practices beyond energy also addressing South Africa’s water and waste challenges. Standard Bank, under his guidance, has allocated over R2 billion to support more than 2000 SMEs transitioning to renewable energy projects. The bank is now extending similar support to water and waste management projects, aiming to enhance resilience and reduce reliance on traditional resources .

Maharaj is an active thought leader across these three sectors. He has contributed to discussions on energy, mining and sustainable development through various platforms. His insights focus on the importance of collaboration between service providers and financial institutions to facilitate the adoption of sustainable solutions. His leadership style is often described as collaborative and solution-oriented – he works closely with engineers, project developers, and policymakers to structure deals that are both commercially viable and sustainable in the long term.

By working across the energy, infrastructure, and mining sectors, he has developed a holistic perspective on how energy security and sustainability fuel economic growth, and he leverages this perspective to advise clients on strategies that improve their resilience and competitiveness.
