ImplementationWalker Solar Bakery is an innovative community-focused enterprise based in Maseru, Lesotho, combining sustainable energy solutions with economic empowerment. Founded by me, the bakery uses renewable solar energy to power its baking operations and to manufacture and distribute solar cookers, addressing local challenges of energy poverty, environmental degradation, and unemployment. By replacing traditional biomass fuels like firewood and charcoal, Walker Solar Bakery reduces deforestation, lowers household carbon emissions, and improves health outcomes by minimising indoor smoke exposure. The project also runs community awareness campaigns that educate residents on the benefits of clean cooking technologies and climate-smart practices. Through training and employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women, the bakery fosters skills development and strengthens local livelihoods. With an emphasis on affordability, sustainability, and social impact, Walker Solar Bakery is positioned as a scalable model that bridges clean energy access and small business growth in underserved communities. The enterprise strives to expand its reach through strategic partnerships, aiming to build a greener economy and resilient communities in Lesotho and beyond.
