Implementation The Papariko Mangrove Project in Kenya is one of Vlinder’s flagship initiatives aimed at restoring 1,500 hectares of degraded mangrove ecosystems across Kwale, Kilifi, and Tana River counties.
The project is designed to plant 4.2 million mangrove trees, sequestering approximately 911,660 tCO2e over a 30-year crediting period, with potential extensions. Beyond environmental restoration, the project integrates significant socio-economic benefits, directly impacting over 8,000 local residents, with a strong emphasis on empowering women, who make up more than 50% of the local staff. The project secured a $150,000 grant from WWF-UK, was awarded the “Bankable Nature Solutions – Investor Voted Project of the Year 2024″ by WWF and received recognition at both county and national levels.
The project already secured $ 1 million investment by a french-based impact investor (hummingbirds) for the first 300 ha and is open for investment for additional 1000 ha.
