Development stageURRDAP, Ubuntu Rural Resource Development and Advancement Programme, driven by UBunTeCH, is a multi-stakeholder programme that aims to transform rural South African communities into commercial fresh-produce suppliers by attacking two interlinked failures: the 30–45% of fresh produce lost between farm and fork, and rural economic structures that force a choice between poverty-level farm labour and urban migration. Two forces drive it: UBunTeCH’s precision-farming technology, and a support network of communities, FMCGs, government, NGOs and impact investors.
The primary driver is UBunTeCH’s precision Variable Rate Technology (VRT) platform: solar-powered IoT ground units capture real-time soil, moisture and climate data and autonomously orchestrate drip irrigation and nutrient dosing per cultivation sector. A central analytics layer turns cross-site data into continuously improving machine-learning models that recommend crops suited to local resources, forecast yield and quality ahead of harvest, and automate collection scheduling with logistics and FMCG partners — while QR-based traceability gives consumers verifiable ESG data at the shelf.
The second driver is the support network, structured so every stakeholder gains. Communities own and operate cooperative farming enterprises, with land secured through lease-to-own agreements — a commercially sound alternative to politically volatile expropriation. FMCG partners contribute offtake agreements, agronomic training and supply-chain integration, gaining a traceable, ESG-verified supply base. Government gains a workable land-reform pathway and rural tax revenue; NGOs and NPOs deliver training and community development; impact investors and DFIs access measurable, SDG-aligned returns. UBunTeCH earns only through revenue share on incremental yield, data licensing, supply-chain SaaS and ESG QR licensing — never upfront fees — aligning its returns directly with farmer income.
The technology driver is de-risked: after 19 months of R&D the platform is nearly built, with iteration one deployed and running in the cloud, with Swiss pilot sites secured, five-plus LOIs signed and first field deployment scheduled in Q2 2027. Swiss small-farm and private-garden validation — plus planned surplus-redistribution partnerships with same-day delivery platforms (Too Good To Go, Uber Eats/eat.ch) — builds the reliability, dataset and revenue base URRDAP’s rollout demands.
Phase 1 (2027–2029) establishes three URRDAP beta communities in South Africa, targeting 500 jobs and 3,000 tonnes of produce annually — grown with measurably lower water and fertiliser inputs, reduced waste across the chain and auditable ESG reporting — before scaling toward one hundred communities and other emerging markets. It aligns with SDGs 1, 2, 8, 12 and 13 and South Africa’s food-security, land-reform and rural-development priorities.
Phase 1 is capitalised through a blended structure. UBunTeCH, the technology partner, is raising a CHF 2.0 million seed round (24-month runway) to complete the platform and Swiss validation; through the AGES pipeline, URRDAP seeks grant and concessional co-funding for the first beta communities, alongside FMCG offtake and government partnership commitments.
URRDAP was developed by UBunTeCH CEO Lee Avnit (14+ years in business founding, consulting and project delivery), working with co-founder and CTO Gunther Schulz (18 years in IoT firmware and embedded hardware; LoRaWAN core contributor with 40,000+ field devices shipped) and CFO Dean Smith (chartered accountant, 15 years of international financial management across USD 3bn+ groups).
