Idea StageMunken Energy is a Nairobi-based company building decentralized solar infrastructure for rural Kenya, where 85% of the population lacks reliable electricity. We deploy grid-tied and off-grid solar PV systems, solar water heating, and battery energy storage (BESS) to bring dependable, 24/7 power to underserved communities.
Rather than selling one-off hardware, Munken owns and operates the infrastructure long-term. Customers across six segments — schools, health clinics, Agri-cooperatives, hospitality and eco-lodges, commercial SMEs, and residential households — pay through outright purchase, lease-to-own financing (24–48 months), or pay-as-you-go mobile-money micro-payments. Munken earns installation margin, financing interest, and recurring service and monitoring fees, creating a durable, recurring revenue base while taking on the upfront capital risk that customers can’t.
This seed round funds the first wave of installations, letting Munken front the cost of financing plans for early customers and prove the model across all six segments before scaling further.
