Overview

Across 35 major markets in Lagos, this programme will process an estimated 140 tonnes of organic waste per day through modular anaerobic digesters, generating clean biogas for cooking, lighting, and mobile-phone charging. This will reduce dependence on diesel generators and charcoal, lowering air pollution, improving fire safety, and creating safer, cleaner trading environments for vendors and shoppers.

A further 156 tonnes of organic waste per day will be diverted for composting, producing organic fertiliser to support urban farming and local greening initiatives. By turning market waste into valuable energy and soil products, the project strengthens a vibrant circular economy that directly benefits surrounding communities.

Beyond environmental gains, this scale-up creates significant green job opportunities. Market youth and women’s groups will be trained to operate digesters, manage waste sorting, run biogas service points, compost processing, and distribute fertiliser. These roles support improved and more stable livelihoods while elevating local technical skills.

Cleaner markets also mean healthier working conditions, reduced odours, fewer pests, and improved hygiene — all contributing to better wellbeing and food safety. Overall, the programme demonstrates how Lagos can transform waste challenges into economic opportunity, climate action, and community resilience at scale.
