Pre-feasibilityThis project aims to scale a sustainable waste management strategy in Tshwane’s informal settlements by strengthening waste collection, promoting waste minimisation, expanding community-based recycling, and piloting organic waste composting to divert waste from landfill. Implemented by Asivikelane, the City of Tshwane, and C40 Cities, the project builds on community-generated evidence to co-produce reliable, community-centred waste services that improve environmental health and create green livelihood opportunities.
The work follows a phased approach. Phase 1 focuses on the seven pilot settlements where Asivikelane and the City are already collaborating to improve waste collection and trial circular economy practices. Phase 2 will expand the model to 20 settlements, Phase 3 to 50, and Phase 4 to 150 settlements, enabling progressive scaling while strengthening municipal capacity, community participation, and the service delivery system.
