Overview

This project seeks to design and implement the rehabilitation of the City of Johannesburg’s 18 Water Management Units. Informed by the “Water Sensitive Cities” (WSC) paradigm, the project reframes stormwater from a hazard into a resource. It aims to integrate stormwater management, land use planning, and river health to address the severe degradation of urban river systems caused by rapid urbanization and exacerbated by climate change. The project will implement appropriate planning and engineering practices to restore rivers as assets, contributing to water security, reduced flood risks, and enhanced public amenity. It directly supports the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) goals for creating a climate-resilient city, specifically targeting water security, flood management, and resilient infrastructure. The project also includes capacity building for local populations to manage and maintain the rehabilitated assets, ensuring long-term sustainability and community benefit.
