Overview

This project aims to develop a comprehensive groundwater monitoring program for the City of Johannesburg to protect and sustainably manage this strategic water resource. While groundwater has great potential to diversify the City’s water supply, its current use is poorly monitored, leading to risks of pollution, over-exploitation, and sinkholes. The project will establish a city-wide spatial monitoring borehole network with real-time reporting on water levels and quality. It includes constructing new monitoring boreholes equipped with sensors, conducting detailed hydro-census studies in priority areas, and developing a central data system. Another key component is capacity building for technical personnel on developing a groundwater simulation models and advanced groundwater data management. The objective is to ensure the long-term resilience of Johannesburg’s water supply, support catchment health, and provide equitable access to good quality groundwater for all users.
