Overview

The Rubeho Mountains Carbon Project protects and restores 394,000 hectares of critically threatened forest in Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains, one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. This integrated landscape restoration initiative combines protection of 260,900 hectares of existing forests (REDD+) with restoration of 10,000 hectares of degraded montane forest (ARR), preventing 70,520 to 86,168 hectares of projected deforestation over the project’s 40+ year lifespan. Led by Compassionate Carbon LLC with local and international partners including TNC, Finance Earth, FSD Africa, and the Tanzania Forest Service, the project works with 40 villages to address the root causes of deforestation through sustainable agriculture, alternative livelihoods, land use planning, and community-based forest management. The Rubeho Mountains also form a critical part of coastal Tanzania’s water supply, including portions of Dar es Salaam.

Why Investing

1
Nature and Biodiversity Impact
The Rubeho Mountains holds one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world in the Eastern Arc Mountains with a great number of endemic species. The Rubeho project will increase forest carbon storage, improve ecosystem resilience and structure, and will support sustainable, climate-resilient community forest management systems
2
Community Benefits
The project will improve livelihoods through regenerative climate-smart agriculture, diversified income sources, and direct employment in carbon project activities. The project supports strengthened local governance through participatory planning and community-led forest management, supports water security and reduces water-born disease for Dar es Salaam residents through watershed protection and water resource conservation, and trains communities in conservation, land-use planning, and carbon project implementation
3
Opportunity for Strong Credit Generation and Financial Returns, with Strong Risk Management Structures
Over 12M total VCUs available over the lifetime of the project with about a 70/30 split REDD+ to ARR, and an estimated post-tax IRR of +16%. Community and government relationships coupled with a strong local team and presence and active analyses on national regulations mitigate risk.
