Pre-implementationThe Rubeho Mountains Carbon Project protects and restores 394,000 hectares of critically threatened forest in Tanzania’s Eastern Arc Mountains, one of the world’s most biodiverse regions. This integrated landscape restoration initiative combines protection of 260,900 hectares of existing forests (REDD+) with restoration of 10,000 hectares of degraded montane forest (ARR), preventing 70,520 to 86,168 hectares of projected deforestation over the project’s 40+ year lifespan. Led by Compassionate Carbon LLC with local and international partners including TNC, Finance Earth, FSD Africa, and the Tanzania Forest Service, the project works with 40 villages to address the root causes of deforestation through sustainable agriculture, alternative livelihoods, land use planning, and community-based forest management. The Rubeho Mountains also form a critical part of coastal Tanzania’s water supply, including portions of Dar es Salaam.
