BOWAMIH is a Botswana-based circular economy initiative focused on transforming underperforming landfills into integrated waste management and industrial hubs. The model combines landfill rehabilitation, Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), and waste-to-value industries under structured public–private partnerships with local councils.

The core objective is to convert environmental liabilities into productive economic assets. Instead of unmanaged dumping and fragmented recycling, BOWAMIH establishes compliant, revenue-generating infrastructure that recovers recyclable materials, supports secondary manufacturing, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

The approach is scalable and nationally aligned, targeting district and town councils that require sustainable, cost-effective waste solutions. Revenue is generated through council service contracts, recovered material sales, and industrial tenant leasing within hub precincts.

By integrating governance, operational management, and community-centred employment strategies, BOWAMIH delivers environmental protection, job creation, and industrial development simultaneously. Anchor pilot locations have been identified, with structured engagement underway to enable phased implementation.

BOWAMIH positions waste not as a disposal problem, but as a long-term economic input—supporting Botswana’s transition toward climate resilience, green industry growth, and inclusive local economic development.
