Solar Nigachem: “Nigeria’s mining story is shifting from extraction to transformation“

Exclusive interview with MS Maureen Tiamiyu, Executive Director (Admin & HR), Solar Nigachem Limited, a silver sponsor of this year’s Nigeria Mining Week and a long-term partner of the event

Let’s start with some background on Solar Nigachem Limited. You have a proud history
Solar Nigachem Limited (SNL) traces its roots to Nigachem Nigeria Limited, a solely owned company incorporated in 1987 and started trading from 1992, with only two containers of ammonium nitrate. In 2008, Nigachem Nigeria Limited entered a joint venture with Solar Industries India, giving rise to Solar Nigachem Limited and the establishment of a cartridge emulsion manufacturing plant with a bulk explosives extension. The factory started production in 2011 and was officially commissioned in 2013. Today, SNL is a leading Nigerian manufacturer and supplier of civil explosives, blasting accessories, and related services. Our signature is Reliability. Beyond quality products, we provide end-to-end client tailored solutions, and we measure success by our customers satisfaction.

Tell us about your products and services
Solar Nigachem Limited is known for its premium civil explosives brand called Superpower. We manufacture this in multiple diameters and formulations to suit different blasting sites. We also manufacture initiation systems, SME, seismic explosives and detonators, cast boosters and everything in the chain. Our services are led by seasoned mining engineers who specialize in rock formations and design site specific solutions, matching each explosive to the pit’s geology and terrain for safer, more efficient blasts. We don’t do one-size-fits-all, every site is carefully analyzed to maximize output.

Where in Africa are you active and where are you looking to for growth?
Solar Nigachem is currently active in Nigeria, where we have established strong operations and long-term partnerships with key players in the mining sectors. Beyond Nigeria, we have extended our footprint into the West African sub region through an active export drive. Our products and services are already present in Niger Republic, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Republic of Benin, where we continue to support quarrying and mining operations with reliable explosives solutions.

How important is Nigeria market for your organisation?
The Nigerian market holds a very strategic importance for Solar Nigachem. Our journey in the explosives business began at a time when mining and quarrying activities were relatively underdeveloped. Over the years, however, Nigeria has witnessed remarkable growth in key sectors that drive demand for explosives, Nigeria’s limestone belt powers one of Africa’s largest cement industries and Nigeria precious metals story has shifted from potential to production. Segilola is proof that large scale mining works.

Nigeria isn’t just our largest market, it is our home base and growth engine. Our manufacturing footprint, technical teams and compliance relationships are based here, and the country’s cement, quarrying and infrastructure pipeline drives consistent explosives demand, the geology is rich and the policies are favorable.

Our factories, licenses, dealers network, and most customer relationships are here, so every investment we make in safety, compliance, talent and capacity starts in Nigeria. It’s where we prove reliability at scale and then export that standard to the rest of Africa.

How excited are you about the burgeoning mining sector in Nigeria, and what does this means for your business there?
I am genuinely excited because the mining sector’s momentum is now tangible. We moved past talking about potentials to actually producing. Mines like Segilola prove it, and mid-stream investments are building local processing capacity. At the same time, governance is tightening, revoking dormant titles signals seriousness and rewards operators who do things right.

A key unlock is the federal policy linking license awards to local processing commitments. This retains value in country, aligns investor incentives with national objectives, and supports stable, long-duration demand for compliant suppliers.

The emerging ‘use it or lose it’ stance means licenses are no longer parking tickets, holders are expected to explore and develop, the net effect is converting geology into bankable projects and that’s good for the country.

For Solar Nigachem, this momentum means more sites to support and a steadier, more formal demand pattern. As the sector expands, operators need safe, reliable, and innovative explosives solutions, which lets us deepen our market presence. I’m excited because the fundamentals are finally aligned, real production, visible processing, and firmer rules of the game. Our job is to convert that momentum into safe, traceable, reliable supply. That is the opportunity we are investing in and why Nigeria is both our anchor and our growth engine.

Which stand-out mining projects are you involved in as a supplier in Nigeria?
Solar Nigachem is embedded in Nigeria’s landmark mining projects. These include the Segilola Gold Mine in Osun State, Nigeria’s first large-scale gold mine where we have supported their activities from inception. We are also backing the newly commissioned lithium processing plant in Nasarawa State, as well as the iron ore projects by African Natural Resources and Mining Limited, Gujeni in Kaduna State. Our role spans safe supply, on-bench support, and strict compliance.

Solar Nigachem is a silver sponsor at Nigeria Mining week. How important is this annual gathering of the mining Industry?
As a Silver Sponsor, we see Nigeria Mining Week as far more than a conference, it is the coordination hub of the industry. In three days, the ecosystem compresses a year’s worth of policy dialogue, investment conversations, technical problem-solving, and talent development.

For Solar Nigachem, this concentration matters because policy clarity becomes operational, capital meets credible projects and for standards and security improvement. Beyond visibility, Nigeria Mining Week gives Solar Nigachem access to strategic networking and business opportunities. Our company can engage directly with potential customers, suppliers, while also staying informed on government reforms and market trends that affect mining operations.

This year is the tenth edition of Nigeria Mining week. Your thoughts?
Reaching the tenth edition of Nigeria Mining Week is more than a milestone, it’s proof that our ecosystem now has continuity. For a decade, policymakers, operators, investors, and OEMs have returned to the same rooms, year after year. That rhythm has turned episodic conversations into a habit of execution.

What makes this anniversary edition pivotal is the nature of the change underway. In just a few years, Nigeria’s mining sector has moved from potential to production, from raw exports to local processing, from paper rules to visible enforcement and from artisanal fragmentation to formal systems.

These are structural shifts, and they deserve all the attention they can get. That’s why this year’s programming is purpose-built to close real gaps across the value chain and to bring practical clarity to the reforms.

For Solar Nigachem, this is where we convert momentum into opportunity and reaffirming our commitment to supporting sustainable growth, innovation, and partnerships in the mining value chain.

What will be your message at the events this year?
My message is simple, Nigeria’s mining story is shifting from extraction to transformation and the only way we unlock real value is by making safety, compliance, and local capability non-negotiable.

Anything you would like to add
Nigeria Mining Week isn’t just about deals and discussions, it is about building the future of mining in Nigeria. To realize that future, safety is key. At Solar Nigachem, safety isn’t a department, it’s the operating system, and we encourage everyone across the value chain to embrace that culture. Innovation and sustainability remain at the heart of what we do. We are committed to solutions that lift productivity while protecting people and the environment. Our invitation is open, if you run a mine, quarry, or plant, bring us your challenges. We will map a site-specific solution that fits your geology, cadence, and compliance needs.

As we look ahead, our focus is clear, stronger partnerships, deeper local content, and reliable, traceable supply, so we can help deliver a vibrant, globally competitive mining sector for Nigeria
