Rokbak: “Nigeria is an important market for us, representing both immediate opportunities and long-term potential”

Exclusive interview with Paul Culliford, Rokbak Regional Sales Manager EMEA. Rokbak recently partnered with the HMD Group, which is a diamond sponsor at Nigeria Mining Week.

Let’s start with some background on Rokbak. You have a proud history.

Rokbak has a rich heritage in the articulated hauler market. This year we are celebrating 75 years of manufacturing excellence at our Motherwell facility in Scotland where our trucks are designed and built. We’re part of the Volvo Group, and our trucks are built on decades of proven engineering expertise. Over the years, we’ve built a reputation for durability and reliability, and when we rebranded as Rokbak in 2021, it was about taking that legacy forward.

Tell us about your products and services.
Our focus is straightforward: articulated haulers. We offer two models, the 28 tonne RA30 and the 38 tonne RA40. These trucks are designed to perform in the toughest environments, from quarries to mines to large-scale construction projects. We also back our haulers with strong aftersales support: parts, service, training and digital tools that help customers get the most out of their investment. It’s about making sure our partners see real value and uptime in their day-to-day operations.

Where in Africa are you active and where are you looking to for growth?
As Rokbak Regional Sales Manager EMEA, I manage territories across Africa where Rokbak trucks can be found working in diverse applications from quarrying to mining in locations such as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Africa is a very important region for us. We’ve got trucks working across the continent, supported by a strong dealer network. Looking ahead, West Africa is an area we see as particularly exciting. Nigeria, for example, stands out as a market with huge potential for growth, and we’re actively working to strengthen our presence to further support customers here.

As part of this focus, we recently partnered with Heavy Machinery Dealership (HMD), a leading heavy equipment distributor in West Africa. We’ve been working with them since 2024 and see this collaboration as a significant step in expanding our footprint in the region and helping local customers have direct access to robust and reliable Rokbak haulers and strong aftermarket support.

How important is the Nigerian market for your organisation?
Nigeria is an important market for Rokbak. As one of Africa’s largest economies, there is a strong demand for infrastructure and resources. For us, it represents both immediate opportunities and long-term potential. We see Nigeria as a place where our reliable and efficient ADTs can make a real difference – supporting projects that are central to the country’s growth.

How excited are you about the burgeoning mining sector in Nigeria and what does this mean for your business there?
We’re keen to support customers with our robust and reliable trucks that are proven in demanding mining conditions. Rokbak haulers are durable, fuel efficient and easy to operate and maintain. As mining in Nigeria scales up, we want to be right there alongside our customers, helping them deliver on their projects by providing trucks with high availability at a low total cost of ownership.

Which stand-out mining projects are you involved in?

Rokbak haulers are already playing an important role in several key operations in West Africa. These projects are exciting because they’re not just about moving material, they’re about contributing to the development of local economies and supporting a growing sector.
