Matrix Energy Group: “The importance of value addition within Nigeria’s mining sector”

Exclusive interview with Engr Abdul Rafiu Badru, Mining Director at Matrix Energy Group, the CEO Roundtable sponsor at the upcoming Nigeria Mining Week in Abuja

Let’s start with some background on the Matrix Energy Group.
You have a proud history. Matrix Energy Group is Nigeria’s leading indigenous and fully integrated energy company with a strong presence in oil marketing, trading, logistics, and distribution. As part of its diversification strategy, the Group established Matrix Minerals Exploration and Mining Limited to actively participate in the solid minerals sector.

At Matrix Mining, we are engaged in the exploration, mining, and trading of solid mineral commodities, with a focus on applying global best practices in responsible mining. Our operations span the extraction and production of various minerals that contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth. Through our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and value creation, Matrix Mining is positioning itself as a trusted partner in driving the nation’s mining sector forward.

Tell us about your products and services.
At Matrix Minerals Exploration and Mining Limited, we specialize in the mining and trading of solid mineral commodities, guided by global best practices and a commitment to responsible operations. Our product portfolio spans a wide range of valuable ores, including cassiterite, zinc, lead, gypsum, dolomite, and lithium, sourced from our assets across different states in Nigeria.

In addition to our mining activities, we operate a licensed mineral buying center, which enables us to provide reliable trading services while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Through this integrated approach, we are able to support both domestic and international markets with high-quality mineral products, while maintaining our focus on sustainability, transparency, and ethical practices.

Where in Africa are you active and where are you looking to for growth?
Currently, our operations are based in Nigeria, with active sites in Wamba (Nasarawa State), Gaube (FCT), Burra (Bauchi State), and Wase (Plateau State), among other locations. These sites form the foundation of our growing mining portfolio and highlight the country’s vast potential in solid minerals.

Looking ahead, our vision is to expand beyond Nigeria into broader African and global markets, positioning Matrix Minerals Exploration and Mining Limited as a key player in the international mineral value chain.

How important is the Nigerian market for your organisation?
The Nigerian market is fundamental to our organisation’s growth and identity. As an indigenous company, our operations are deeply rooted in Nigeria’s rich and diverse mineral resources, which provide a strong platform for sustainable mining and trading activities. Beyond serving as our operational base, Nigeria also represents one of the largest markets in Africa with immense opportunities for growth in the solid minerals sector.

For Matrix Minerals Exploration and Mining Limited, Nigeria is not just a starting point—it is a strategic hub from which we aim to drive value creation, build local capacity, and expand into regional and global markets.

How excited are you about the burgeoning mining sector in Nigeria and what does this mean for your business there?
At Matrix Minerals Exploration and Mining Limited, we are proud to play a key role in Nigeria’s mining and agricultural value chains. We supply dolomite rocks to Matrix Fertilizer Limited, where they are used in fertilizer blends that support food security and create employment opportunities across the country. Matrix Fertilizer Limited, with a blending capacity of 550,000 MT annually, is one of Nigeria’s leading fertilizer plants, producing top-quality fertilizers at competitive prices.

In addition, we operate a 100TPH Tin processing plant, a project that reflects both our growing capacity and our commitment to adding value within Nigeria’s solid minerals sector. These initiatives highlight our contribution to industrial growth, sustainable development, and the expansion of local value chains.

Matrix Energy Group is a partner at the upcoming Nigeria Mining Week. How important is this annual gathering of the mining industry?
The Nigeria Mining Week is a highly significant event for us. As sponsors of the CEO Roundtable Forum, our participation underscores our commitment to engaging with key stakeholders across the Nigerian mining industry. It provides a valuable platform to exchange ideas, share our perspectives, and collaborate with industry leaders and policymakers—including the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development—on strategies to strengthen and grow the sector. For Matrix Minerals Exploration and Mining Limited, this gathering is an opportunity to reaffirm our role as active contributors to the advancement of Nigeria’s mining landscape.

This year is the tenth edition of Nigeria Mining Week. Your thoughts? The tenth edition of Nigeria Mining Week is a significant milestone, reflecting the steady growth and resilience of the Nigerian mining sector. It provides an excellent platform to celebrate progress, strengthen collaborations, and chart the path for the next decade of sustainable mining in Nigeria.

What will be your message at the event this year?
Our key message this year is centered on the importance of value addition within Nigeria’s mining sector. As our Mining Director participates as a panelist on the discussion “From Raw Exports to Value Chains: Building Nigeria’s Mineral Beneficiation and Processing Strategy”, we aim to emphasize the need for beneficiation and local processing. This approach not only strengthens Nigeria’s economic growth but also creates jobs, drives industrial development, and ensures the country maximizes the true value of its mineral resources.
