Zimbabwe is accelerating efforts to strengthen its position in the global lithium value chain, with nearly $900 million committed toward domestic lithium processing projects. The move forms part of a broader strategy to shift away from raw mineral exports and capture greater economic value from one of the country’s most strategically important resources.
As global demand for battery minerals continues to rise, Zimbabwe’s lithium sector has emerged as a focal point for foreign investment, particularly in downstream processing capacity that supports electric vehicle and energy storage markets.
Recent investments by international mining and processing companies are aimed at converting lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate into higher-value battery precursor materials. These projects represent a significant step toward local beneficiation, reducing reliance on exports of unprocessed minerals.
Key developments include the construction of large-scale lithium processing facilities designed to produce lithium sulfate for use in battery manufacturing. Once operational, these plants are expected to process tens of thousands of tonnes annually, positioning Zimbabwe as a more competitive supplier within global battery supply chains.
This shift aligns with government policy objectives to increase industrial activity, support job creation, and boost export earnings through value-added production rather than raw material sales.
Zimbabwe has already implemented restrictions on raw lithium ore exports and has announced plans to ban the export of lithium concentrate by January 2027. The policy is intended to encourage mining companies to invest in domestic processing infrastructure and retain more value within the local economy.
The timeline places pressure on operators to bring processing facilities online within the next few years, while also requiring supportive infrastructure to ensure operational viability.
Despite strong investment momentum, energy availability remains a critical challenge. Lithium processing is energy-intensive and requires consistent, reliable electricity to operate efficiently. Zimbabwe continues to face power generation shortfalls, driven by ageing infrastructure, constrained capacity, and hydropower variability.
Without targeted investment in energy generation and grid reliability, power supply limitations could delay project timelines or increase operational costs for processors. As a result, energy security is increasingly viewed as a determining factor in the long-term success of Zimbabwe’s lithium beneficiation strategy.
Opportunities exist for complementary investments in renewable energy and captive power solutions to support mining and processing operations.
Lithium is now central to Zimbabwe’s ambitions to modernise its mining sector and integrate more deeply into global clean energy value chains. Successful expansion of local processing could enhance foreign exchange earnings, support industrial development, and strengthen the country’s position as a regional minerals hub.
However, balancing regulatory ambitions with infrastructure readiness will be essential. The pace at which power constraints are addressed may ultimately determine whether Zimbabwe can fully realise the economic benefits of its lithium resources.
