ImplementationMost of the hydrogen in the world is produced by reforming natural gas. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon, but it does not increase the carbon content of our atmosphere as long as it remains in reservoirs below the earth’s surface. Hydrogen generated from biogas is considered to be a “carbon-neutral” fuel since it is generated from biomass and wood wastes (organic matter). Hydrogen made from renewable resources is carbon neutral because no extra carbon is being released into the earth’s atmosphere than what was originally absorbed during photosynthesis by the plants used for biogas production. Natural gas can be replaced by biogas for the production of synthesis gas. Hydrogen is produced from synthesis gas, which is produced from raw material – natural gas or biogas. The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), has an established 30m3 bio-digester for the production of biogas (via a grant award from the Royal Academy of Engineering, U.K. www.fupre.edu.ng/biogas)
