Maxhoshwa Pty Ltd* is a Durban-based 100% Black-owned green building materials company driving the circular economy in South Africa’s construction sector.

Founded by Vuyani Shandu, Maxhoshwa was established to address two urgent realities in KwaZulu-Natal: the growing crisis of illegal dumping of construction and plastic waste in township communities, and the unaffordability of conventional building materials for low-income housing and emerging builders.

We operate at the intersection of waste management, recycling, and sustainable construction. Our core wsz, is the collection, sorting, and conversion of difficult-to-recycle construction and demolition waste, industrial waste, and plastics into affordable, low-cement, low-carbon building materials such as blocks, pavers, and bricks. By incorporating recycled aggregates and alternative binders, our proprietary mix design uses up to 60% less traditional cement, resulting in products that are 30% more affordable, stronger, more thermally efficient, and significantly lower in carbon emissions.

What sets us apart is our hyper-local, inclusive circular model. We source waste within a 10km radius of our operations, creating sustainable income opportunities for local waste pickers, unemployed youth, and women. We then manufacture locally and supply back to the same communities, home builders, contractors, and housing projects, ensuring value remains within the township economy.

Maxhoshwa is NHBRC-aligned and committed to quality, compliance, and skills development. Beyond manufacturing, we train emerging home builders and youth in green building techniques, empowering them to become certified installers and entrepreneurs in the green economy.
