Overview

Project Mafisa, led by Zambian NGO Mafisa, is a transformative initiative that combines climate action with community empowerment. Through improved rotational grazing and fire management across 1 million ha, the project restores degraded rangelands, enhances biodiversity and sequesters 24+ million tCO2. Carbon investment fund animal health services for farmers—boosting herd productivity and reducing mortality—and access to market via new cattle buying centres. 470+ boreholes provide access to water, enabling rotational grazing practices and supporting small-scale agricultural activities. Non-cattle owners, in particularly women, are supported by alternative income-generating activities, including drought-resilient crops and small livestock initiatives. With deep community engagement and traditional leadership support, Mafisa revives indigenous practices while building sustainable, inclusive rural economies, benefitting around 100,000 people of Zambia’s most vulnerable communities.
