Overview

EWaste Africa is developing an integrated battery management model to address the rising volumes of end-of-life batteries in South Africa. With the increasing use of portable electronics, electric mobility, and large-scale energy storage, more batteries are entering the waste stream, requiring responsible handling to prevent environmental harm and recover valuable resources. The model combines two interconnected operations. The first focuses on assessing incoming batteries to determine whether they are suitable for limited reuse in appropriate applications. This creates a pathway to extend the life of units that remain safe and functional. The second is a dedicated battery recycling facility designed for all portable battery types, alkaline batteries, all lithium-ion chemistries and large-scale BESS units. This facility will prioritise the extraction of critical materials, such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, copper, and graphite, as well as the recovery of aluminium, steel, and plastics. These materials can be reintroduced into manufacturing supply chains, reducing the need for primary mining. By linking assessment with advanced recycling, the project ensures that batteries are diverted from landfills and processed in accordance with circular economy principles. This strengthens national capability for responsible battery management and supports long-term resource security.
