Pre-implementationFounded in October 2022 by Melian Dott, BAOM is a South African biotechnology startup focused on creating biofilms from cellulose as sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic packaging. Despite challenges like funding, exposure, and operational difficulties from power outages, BAOM remains committed to its mission to combat plastic pollution.
Key achievements include securing a grant from UVU Bio for access to Africa’s first open-access state-of-the-art laboratory and successfully validating their innovative intellectual property. Currently, BAOM is developing single-use refill packaging for the cosmetic industry, aiming to reduce plastic waste.
With a vision for exponential growth in the South African biotech sector, BAOM has been accepted into five accelerator programs and earned the Best Newcomer award at the Global Startup Awards. Guided by their belief that “You can make an impact; the change comes from you,” BAOM strives to inspire a sustainable future.
